To-Do List - Preparing to Bring Your Baby Home

The final weeks of pregnancy come with much excitement and very little sleep. This is your body's natural way to prepare you for your newborn baby.
It is a good idea to start preparing to bring your baby home well in advance of this stage. While not everything can be done months in advance, it is good to get as much done as possible so you can use the last weeks wisely. There are many things that babies need as soon as you bring them home. Trips to the store are not likely going to happen for at least a week or two.

Here is a list of things that can be completed sooner rather than later.

Bassinet Sheet

• Clean out the baby nursery, including the closet.
• If you plan to paint or decorate, do it early because this baby nursery will soon become the dumping grounds.
• Start researching and looking for the larger items so you have time to find what you really want.
• Bring home the nursery furniture and set it up. This helps with anticipation and helps that you have places to put things as they accumulate.
• Choose the crib bedding set for your nursery and start collecting the bedding accessories
• Wash windows, empty storage closets, throw out things that you will never use again. Your house will fill up soon enough with newborn gifts and other baby-related items.
• Shop for a camera
• Make sure you have a comfortable chair for every floor of your house.

Leaving these tasks until the last month will change them from being exciting tasks to enormous stresses that you won't want to deal with. People end up spending a lot of money on the last-minute trip to the store to buy everything at once. Buy one item a week and you will hardly notice it in your budget and it will be fun to shop. Not only that, you can buy one thing a week that is on sale and save lots of money.

If someone is hosting a baby shower, try to request about a month before the due date so that you will have time to shop for the newborn gifts that you did not receive.

Here is a list of the things that should be done a month before the due date. Don't forget that you will start tiring faster and you will be spending a lot more time at the doctor's office in the last couple of weeks. The more that is done in advance, the quieter and calmer everything will be when baby finally does come home. You will have more time to rest and enjoy getting to know your baby.

• Wash all the baby blankets, crib sheets and clothes and organize them in the baby nursery.
• Hang clothes that are too big on hangers in order by size so you can keep track of what you have.
• Put on the crib sheets or bassinet sheets.
• Set up the changing table and have everything within easy reach.
• Sterilize everything that needs it and store in a sterile environment (bottles, pacifiers, etc)
• Properly install the car seat (at least have the base installed)
• Pack hospital bags (one for yourself and a diaper bag for the baby)
• Keep the pantry well stocked with healthy, easy-to-make foods.
• Keep on top of your laundry, dishes, floors and bathrooms so you don't get caught bringing baby home to a big mess.
• Two weeks before, stock your freezer with foods that freeze well. You may also consider making some low-fat bran muffins since you will soon be looking for lots of healthy snacks.

Bringing your newborn baby home to a clean and organized house will make it easier on everyone. You will feel better about people stopping by with newborn gifts. Many people like to look at the baby nursery and you will be proud to show it off. You will feel much more confident as a mother if things are under control. The first few days should be spent resting and getting to know your baby.
